The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival will be grandly held in Sanya, Hainan Province, from December 4th to 10th, 2024. As one of the pioneering projects in the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port (Hainan FTP), the film festival of this year will continue to offer a spectacular cinematic feast to film enthusiasts from around the world.
The 6th HIIFF “Golden Coconut Awards” competition is divided into three categories: Best Feature Film, Best Feature Documentary, and Best Short Film. The jury panel will be chaired by renowned French director Luc Besson, and 10 awards will be presented: Best Film Award, Jury Grand Prix, Best Director Award, Best Actor Award, Best Actress Award, Best Screenplay Award, Best Visual Effects Award, Best Chinese-language Contribution Award, Best Documentary Award, and Best Short Film Award.
The “Golden Coconut Award” competition and screening sections called for outstanding films from around the globe, receiving a total of 4,330 film submissions from 117 countries and regions. These include 901 feature films, 396 feature documentaries, and 3,033 short films, covering countries and regions such as China, India, Brazil, Russia, Spain, France, the United States, Iran, Turkey, and Italy. After careful selection by the jury panel, 14 feature films, 8 feature documentaries, and 10 short films were shortlisted for the "Golden Coconut Award" competition of this year's festival.
The shortlisted feature films include 78 Days, A Dark Light, Girls Will Be Girls, Holy Electricity, Invention, Julie Keeps Quiet, My Friend An Delie, Pavane For An Infant, She Sat There Like All Ordinary Ones, The American Backyard, The Dog's Trial, The Great Yawn of History, Three Friends, and Through Rocks and Clouds; The shortlisted feature documentaries include 7 Beats Per Minute, An Oscillating Shadow, April in France, Fabric of Lives, Gaucho Gaucho, Never Too Late, The Speedway Murders, and Who Cares?; The shortlisted short films include Daphne Was A Torso Ending in Leaves, Fence, Murmur of August, Poems of Timeless Acclaim, Summit Song, The Bride Who Rides A Sleigh, The Nature of Dogs, Trees Painted in Tar, Ultraviolet, and Vox Humana.
The event venues have been meticulously selected. The opening and closing ceremonies, along with the red carpet, will be held at the Olympic Square on Phoenix Island in Sanya, with the Sanya Bay coastline as the backdrop. The "Have-Fun Outdoor Screening" venues include Sanya Conifer Resort’s infinity pool, Luhuitou Park, Aranya Lawn, Tianya Town, and Wanning Shimei Bay Resort, etc. Masterclasses will be held on the seaside terrace of Phoenix Island, offering participants a unique experience.
During the film festival, main activities will include the "Golden Coconut Award” competition, Golden Coconut Forum, Masterclasses, Screenings, and the Closing Ceremony, as well as several Public Benefit Events such as the "Have-Fun Outdoor Screening" and "Gala Night-The New Film Crew Meeting" Additionally, this year’s festival will offer discounted ticket promotions to encourage cultural and tourism integration and promote the development of the film industry.
Moreover, this year’s festival will focus on the theme "Intersecting and Mutual Appreciation of Culture and Tourism," with various international cultural exchange activities centered around topics such as "Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Sino-French Diplomatic Relations." Highlights will include the Annual French New Films Exhibition, French-Chinese Cultural Exchange Film Retrospective, Spanish Film Week, ASEAN Film Exhibition, International Film Masterclasses, and more, all aimed at fostering deeper cultural exchanges between Chinese and foreign film industries.
